London, 17th May 2019: Last night, FE brought together over 250 members of the fund management industry at LSO St Luke’s to celebrate the 2019 FE Alpha Manager of the Year Awards. The ceremony was hosted by British favourite, Hugh Dennis, who presented 12 awards to this year’s best fund managers.
It was a double celebration for Eric Holt, Mike Fox and Michael Lindsell. Holt from Royal London won overall Best Alpha Manager and Best Strategic Bond Alpha Manager and was the most highly scored among all FE Alpha Managers this year. Over 7 years Holt has had an outstanding 85% cumulative performance growth, and an annualised total return of +7.1% over 19 years. Fox from Royal London won Best UK Equities Alpha Manager and Best Mixed Assets Alpha Manager.
Lindsell from Lindsell Train won Best Japanese Equities Alpha Manager and Best Global Equities Alpha Manager with Nick Train. With a +7.3% annualised total return over 18 years, Lindsell has had a 203.6% cumulative performance growth over 7 years and was the only manager in the Japanese Equities sector to generate a positive return last year.
The FE Alpha Manager Awards continues to shine a light on top emerging talent in the asset management industry with its Best New Alpha Manager award. This year the award was won by the Comgest European Team; Laurent Dobler, Franz Weis and Arnaud Cosserat from Comgest.
Peter Little, CEO at FE says: “The FE Alpha Manager awards are a celebration of the industry’s best-rated fund managers. They are recognition of a manager’s ability to create risk-adjusted alpha, outperformance in both rising and falling markets and of those who consistently beat their sector peers.”

Charles Younes, research manager at FE, comments: “This year’s award winners have combined consistent performance throughout their career with phenomenal outperformance over the past year in their respective categories. This is an incredible achievement in the face of unpredictable markets and increased volatility in 2018.
“The winners are determined by narrowing down the FE Alpha-rated managers to a list of the highest-scoring managers per category. Once we had a refined list, our panel applied a qualitative overlay to select the brightest stars.”
