Revealed: The FE Alpha Manager Awards 2019 Shortlist

Wed 24 Apr, 2019 / by Corporate

WEDNESDAY 24th APRIL, 2019: FE, the investment ratings and research agency, announced today the fund managers that have made it onto the shortlist for this year’s FE Alpha Manager of the Year Awards with David Dudding, Gary Greenberg, Francis Brooke, Hugh Yarrow, Stephen Moore and Aziz Hamzaogullari among the list of the industry’s top talent.

There are 12 award categories this year, including the highly coveted FE Alpha Manager of the Year and Best New FE Alpha Manager. See below table for full list of categories and shortlisted managers.

The managers represent a total of 37 fund groups including Janus Henderson, First State Investments, Liontrust, Man GLG, Polar Capital, T.Rowe Price and Sarasin. BlackRock and Royal London lead the pack with four nominations each followed by Lindsell Train with three.

Tim Wood, Richard Woolnough, Laurent Dobler, Franz Weis, Arnaud Cosserat, Gordon Fraser and John Godley have each been shortlisted in more than one category this year.

The managers have been shortlisted from the 200 fund managers that were awarded an FE Alpha Manager Rating in the 2019 rebalance. These ratings recognise a manager’s ability to create risk-adjusted alpha, outperformance in both rising and falling markets, and those who consistently beat their sector peers.

Rob Gleeson, Head of Research at FE comments: “2018 was a tough year, with record breaking gains in some markets coming to an abrupt end in a burst of volatility. With this being the first significant market sell off for ten years, and possibly the first end of an expansion market for thirty years, the benefits of experience are clear. With the end of the cycle near, or upon us, or even past, the challenges for managers are only going to grow as uncertainty increases, this year’s winners have all had to demonstrate skill in a rapidly changing environment.”

The shortlist for each category was determined by identifying the highest scoring FE Alpha Managers from the 2019 rebalance. A mix of quantitative and qualitative assessment was then applied to pick the brightest stars.

The winners of each category will be announced at the FE Alpha Manager Awards ceremony on 16th May 2019 at the London Symphony Orchestra, St Luke's.
