We are pleased to announce that 42 managers have made it into the 2017 FE Alpha Manager Hall of Fame - an elite group of managers who have been consistently FE Alpha-rated over the last seven years.
Over half of the managers in this select group - which represents approximately 2% of the industry - have retained their seat for the third-year running. There are 10 new entrants including equity income expert Francis Brooke of Troy Asset Management, Nick Train, the quality growth manager of Lindsell Train and value and small cap guru Alex Wright of Fidelity.
Mika-John Southworth, director at FE, said: “Investors crave consistency from asset managers to help protect their capital, especially in periods of prolonged uncertainty and market volatility. Seven years of delivering risk-adjusted alpha and consistent outperformance is a big ask. Investors can be confident that the performance of managers in the FE Hall of Fame is down to genuine skill and conviction, rather than luck.
“Over half of the members of the FE Alpha Manager Hall of Fame have maintained their place for the past three years. Given the unpredictable market conditions we have been facing in recent years, it is also particularly encouraging to see so many managers enter the FE Hall of Fame for the first time.”
Managers retaining their place in the FE Alpha Manager Hall of Fame for the third-year running include fixed income heavyweights Richard Woolnough of M&G and Fidelity’s Ian Spreadbury. Star UK equity income manager Neil Woodford also made the grade again this year alongside Crux Asset Management’s Richard Pease and Standard Life’s Harry Nimmo. Please see the tables below for the full list of managers in the 2017 FE Alpha Manager Hall of Fame.
FE Alpha ratings are judged according to managers’ track records since 2000, with extra weighting for those with the longest track records to highlight the benefits of experience. The rating is based on three components: risk-adjusted alpha; consistency of outperformance versus their benchmark; and outperformance in both up and down markets.
Overall, 193 fund managers were awarded an FE Alpha Manager Rating in the 2017 rebalance and Schroders and Fidelity International topped the board at a group level. 56 new Alpha Managers were awarded, 40 of which had never previously made the list.
The Hall of Fame will be unveiled and displayed at the FE Alpha Manager Awards ceremony to be held at the Tate Modern on 11 May, 2017.
